Cell Phone Safety and Children
Oscar Smith, CISM Chaplain
All Rights Reserved 8/2009
Well over a third of the 20 million American preteen children between the ages of 8-12 already have a cell phone. As a Chaplain it can be disturbing to see parents arming their children without proper instruction on how to use them. There is a study that I just read by NPS based on more than 110,000 interviews with prepaid and other cell phone users who were asked about emergency/safety use of wireless phones.
The findings are that a big share of 911emergency calls are being placed by children who need to be taught that these phones are not toys but tools. Nearly a quarter of a million calls are made daily. My advocacy is to
Help encourage parents to fully explain that placing an emergency call will bring a police officer, firefighter or EMT to the scene. My book “Quick Fire is Faster Than a Fire Truck” makes several recommendations for enhanced safety for children with cell phones.

SATISFACTION YOU DESERVE

As a person who meets others fairly easily, I was introduced to CT at a local restaurant who distributes Jan Darpan Magazine. He said it was the best publication he had read in years. The question which inspires me to write this was, ”will you make sure Inspiring Leaders be people who we can trust to do business with?”
One marked difference between Jan Darpan and other publications is that we do not concern ourselves only with the fruit, as a Chaplain I’m concerned about the root of the matter. ”The root of the righteous yields fruit ” said the wise man in the Proverbs (12:12).
Much that passes for feature profiles of outstanding individuals and or businesses today is the brief, bright effort of the severed branch to bring forth “it’s fruit” in its season. There is a big PRIDE factor that exists today that shouts PLEASE RECOGNIZE I DESERVE EXALTATION. But the deep laws of life are against this typ ...more

ONE WAY AFFECTION
By Oscar Smith (Copyright 2009)
The core feature of any relationship is MUTUALITY. Mutual awareness is a prerequisite to establishing a relationship between two parties. Relationships are only possible with individuals, not with races, segments, populations or markets. The very first task in establishing a solid mutual beneficial relationship is to identify individually the party at the other end of the relationship.
I have a heart for people and with everyone I have a chance to meet there are characteristics that each one has that are unique. As a Chaplain it is my ongoing goal to improve the effectiveness of my interactions with the folks that I meet. As a business executive it is very important to establish a system to understand the needs of that particular business. Relationships cannot happen except in the concept of mutual trust.
There is absolutely a need today in this economic climate to foster many relationships.
Becoming that person who can be tr ...more

A Bathtub Can Be Dangerous!

One of the most challenging times I have had as a Chaplain has been the visits to hospitals where parents are anxiously awaiting a word on the condition of their child who was rushed to the emergency room after being injured in the home. Each year approximately 3,800 injuries and 34 deaths occur in the home due to scalding from excessive hot tap water. The majority of these accidents involve believe it or not the elderly and children under the age of five. When was the last time you checked the temperature on your water heater? Did you know burns will occur with a six second exposure to 140 degree water or with a thirty second exposure to 130 degree water? Even if the temperature is 120 degrees a five -minute exposure could result in third degree burns. Around my home we take hot water serious. Thank God my sons are grown now but when toddlers we always hand tested the water before using ...more
