Finishing Touches of Ganesh
Though the idol does not have a boarding pass yet but soon it will fly to America. One of the many idols has being ordered by homesick Maharashtrians that miss the “Ganpati Bappa” fervour which is one of the biggest festivities in Mumbai.
Lalbaugh Cha Raja or King of Lalbaugh is one of the oldest and largest Ganpati community celebrations in Mumbai. It owes its name to its origin to Lalbaugh colony which has been home to idol-makers.
Over the years, the demand for Lalbaugh Cha Raja has grown among NRI’s in US, Britain, Singapore and UK. With only few days to go for Ganesh Chaturthi this year, the idol makers are in full swing putting the finishing touches on the hand crafted statues of the Lord.
Idol making is huge business. The skill is handed over from generation to generation, plus many migrants come down to Mumbai to help in this labour intensive process.
