The much awaited ‘Ananda Utsav’ organized by Ananda Bazar Patrika was held in Los Angeles from the 4th of September till the 6th of September, 2010. After its grand success in London, U.K, ‘Ananda Utsav’ was a great gift to the Bengali community living in the US.
For three days The Pasadena Convention Center in Los Angeles saw all that was ‘Bong and Beautiful’. Sharmila Tagore and Ustad Amjad Ali Khan inaugurated the event. Southern California flaunted sarees and kurtas extensively during the three day Bengali festival.
From music to drama, rock to raga, the stage at the Exhibit Hall was never short of energy from the moment Sharmila Tagore and Ustad Amjad Ali Khan inaugurated the event. It was a sight (and sound) for starved non-resident Bengali eyes (and ears) as back-to-back performances kept them spellbound in their seats.
The burgers and sandwiches took a break as ‘Dhonepata Murgi’, ‘Shorshe Koi’ and ‘pantua’ took over.
Rabindranath Tagore was payed tribute on his 150th birth anniversary with stunning performances like ‘Bhanushingher Podaboli’ and Sunidhi Chauhan’s ‘Bhalobashi bhalobashi’ and Anjan Dutta’s ‘Purano Shei Deener Kotha’.
But the crowning glory of the Tagore mania in Los Angeles was Ustad Amjad Ali Khan playing Jodi tor daak shune keu na ashey on the sarod. “I had the privilege of recording an album of Rabindrasangeet with Suchitra Mitra and it was a great experience,” he said.
