Sanghamitra organizes Medhavadhanam in St. Louis

Sreenivasa Ramanujan Mathematricks club, organized by Sanghamitra (a non profit organization), presented Medhavadhanam 2010 in two different venues this year ¡V On July 31st at Daniel Boone Library and 7th Thornhill Library. Eight participants in the age group 8 ¡V 15 kept over 60 audience spell bound by their quick responses to complex mathematics problems.

Mrs. Chandra Rednam, a high school mathematics teacher, chief guest for the event, shared lots of interesting information about Mathematics like why do we call addition as ¡¥addition¡¦, why do we represent slope with a letter ¡¥m¡¦ etc. She shared the story of ¡¥Srinivasa Ramanujan¡¦ and his achievements as the Mathematricks club is named after him.

Srinivasa Ramanujan Mathematricks Club conducts classes every summer for two months, during which it shares knowledge including Vedic Mathematics, problem solving techniques etc. Medhavadhanam is presentation of the skills by each participant followed by award ceremony. Various topics include 5th root of a number, Cube root of a number, 4 x 4 and 5 x 5 matrix solving, computing the day of the week given the Date, Month & Year, square of a number below 100, computing the recurring decimal places of fractions like 1/29, 1/59 etc. All these questions are answered spontaneously without using a calculator or paper-pencil or any computing aid.

As an introduction, Sreenivasa Rao Ainapurapu, who conducted Srinivasa Ramanujan Mathematricks Club, explained the various activities handled by Sanghamitra and explained the meaning ¡V Sangha means society and Mitra means friend ¡V so the word ¡¥Sanghamitra¡¦ means ¡¥Friend of a society¡¦. He asked audience to become part of Sanghamitra by supporting families whom they think need help either by providing food or by donating books or clothes etc. at their comfort level. Later he explained about Vedic Mathematics, how the formulae were encrypted in the poems by showing an example which reveals the value of ƒ^(PI).

All the participated kids Neha Checka, Shikha Annem, Ayush Ajmani, Sruthi Ainapurapu, Sravya Ainapurapu, Veeren Vellanki, Rohith Perla and Mohith Nagaraj did a great job and left audience in amazed state.
