The staple diet and the most popular vegetable was not appreciated much because of its high carbohydrate content.
Subra Chakroborty and his colleagues at the India’s Central Potato Research have developed this potato by taking genes from amaranth plant . The plant is said to have a better production because of more rate of photosynthesis.
The genetic potato is said to have 60 percent more protein than the regular ones. The stored proteins in the tubers are triggered via a DNA code. The potato is free of any kind of toxic effect and allergies as tests were conducted on rats and rabbits came out positive.
The transgenic potatoes are ready for consumption as it provides a good source of nutrition. Chakroborty said that the potato will be commercialized soon.
