Tail hems that tell a tale

Oct 21, 2011

It’s the long and short of things that’s creating a buzz on the fashion front. If you are bored of the minis and maxis, the season promises something interesting in the form of tail hem dresses. Nothing complicated here, simply a dress that is longer at the back and has a shorter front.

Designer Abhishek Dutta sees a lot of exciting possibilities in stretching the back of a dress. “It gives a designer enough room to explore the length and give a creative stroke to the tail which comes out in variations. So you have a simple hem cut at an angle or a stylised version where the fabric is placed in such a manner, it resembles the petals of a flower. Or for a more dramatic effect, a hem that is short in the front while at the back flows like a maxi can look good,” he says, adding, “The best effect of a tail hem comes out in sheer, other fabrics like georgette, chiffons, crepes and even organza do justice to the design.”

“Beyond the seasonal trend, traditionally tail hems make an appearance in the bridal dress, especially if it’s a royal affair. Point in case was Kate Middleton’s bridal attire that elaborately displayed it,” feels Agnimitra Paul. She feels the concept brings out a feminine touch to a dress. “It perfectly defines the ‘a bit of expose, a bit of cover’ style mantra and gives a flowy effect. This particular style works well in tops and shirts. It’s just a matter of unbalancing the length and letting the scissors do some creative talking,” the designer says.
